Tanning is the phenomenon by which the skin takes on a darker color in response to exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UV) of natural resources (like the sun) or artificial. Whereas moderate sun exposure is beneficial to health, tanning is due to melanin production in the epidermis, reflecting a natural defense mechanism in response to an excess of radiation, which could have a detrimental effect on cell DNA . In fact, excessive exposure to radiation, including artificiel2 can cause burns (sunburn) and long-term foster the development of skin cancer. For prolonged exposure, use sunscreen UV filter therefore essential.

 In human societies, particularly in the context of seduction, tanning is perceived differently at different times and in different cultures.
