Amazing, amazing, amazing, only three of the adjectives that have become the norm to describe the most mundane things. However, when it comes to trying to portray my weekend in Reykjavik, Iceland believe me none of them do not do it justice!
We take the early flight Thursday morning Easyjet from Manchester, takes off in Keflavik 2-2 hours transfer from the airport to Reklavik about 45 minutes.
We stayed at the 3-star Hafnafjordur (try saying that the driver after a night on the town) on the outskirts of Reykjavik. From the outside the hotel looked pretty unattractive air but spotlessly clean and the rooms are spacious with a small kitchen if you need these facilities. All staff spoke fluent English and the service was five stars. They could not do enough for you.
There was a beautiful blue sky and the temperature was about 9 degrees, but it was much warmer in the sun. We reserved for observing the whales next afternoon, but time seemed rather unfavorable therefore asked the hotel receptionist if it would be possible to reorganize our trip in the afternoon. A simple call to the tour company and our mini-bus pick-up was created by a time hours.
Whale watching is shipped from the old port of Reykjavik and went into the waters of the Bay of Faxaflói. Although it was a sunny day it was pretty cold at bay. The company provides efficient boats warm clothes to those in need. The trip was wonderful with porpoises, dolphins and whales spotted several Minkie during our tour. Many seabirds including guillemots, terns and puffins Arctic were also in abundance.
We returned to Reykjavik around 17:00 so we went to explore the city. Although almost half of the population lives in countries in Reykjavik city is not very big and it was not long before we found the Laugavegur district with its shops and bars. Drinks prices are quite steep, but most bars seem to have happy hours in the afternoon, we ended our day with a beer or too and we met some of the most beautiful places that reached everywhere.
The next day, we have a little more serious in Reykjavik tourism, we jumped on the local bus, our receptionist pointed out the bus stop and gave us the prices were very reasonable and we left.
You can not miss the Church Hallgrímur surprising as it dominates the skyline of Reykjavik, here you can take the elevator to the top of the tower and have a look for an amazing bird of the city and the surrounding coastline. Harpa Conference Center and Opera House is a masterpiece of beautiful architecture and well worth the visit. A few minutes walk from Harpa is the impressive Viking Ship Solfar a beautiful work of art. To reflect the colorful history of Iceland there are many museums, Viking Village and the like but with only so much time available, we had to miss it this time.
